Your best candidates are scrolling right past you

The best candidates no longer apply. They scroll. They scroll through Instagram during their lunch break, LinkedIn on their way to work and TikTok in the evening on the couch. While you wait for responses to your job adverts, talent is literally slipping through your fingers. It's not because they don't find your company interesting; it's simply because they don't see you.

If you want to win the battle for talent, you have to be where potential employees are mentally today.

Blind spot: visibility

As you know, a position has been advertised for weeks, the budget for the job board has been used up and only a few applications have come in, none of which are suitable. However, the problem is rarely your company's or your position's attractiveness. The problem is that 80% of your ideal candidates never look for jobs on job boards. They are busy, satisfied in their current position, and would only change jobs if they received the right offer. So, how do you reach these 'change-willing' people? That's right: social media, where they spend several hours a day anyway. Your competitors are already appearing in the feeds of potential talent. Where is your company? Make it visible!

No excuses

We often hear phrases such as “We can't afford that” or “We don't have the resources for that”. However, this is a misconception: social media recruitment is an efficient solution, not a luxury strategy, especially for smaller companies. Unlike expensive headhunters, active sourcing (which I will cover in a future blog post) or widely distributed advertisements, you can target people in your region with the right education and interests on a small budget. A local craft business, for example, can reach skilled workers within a 20-kilometre radius who are currently dissatisfied with their working environment. There is no wastage or wasted budget, just relevant reach among people who could be a good fit.

Facing reality

Facing reality: your next employee is lying on the sofa, scrolling through Instagram. Not because she's actively looking for a job, but because it's after work. Right now, you could show her what a normal working day at your company looks like: authentically and in just 30 seconds, without the need for a glossy brochure. People no longer make career decisions based solely on rationality. They want to know if they would fit in with the team and work environment, and if the company's values align with their own. No job description on a job platform can convey that feeling. Only content that showcases your company's personality can do that: real employees, real insights, real culture.
